These are the key terms for units 2.1 to 2.2.

Resume

A document created by a person to present their background, skills, and accomplishments. Resumes can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment.

Cover Letter

A written document submitted with a job application explaining the applicant's credentials and interest in the open position.

Informational Interview

A meeting in which a job seeker asks for career and industry advice rather than employment. The job seeker uses the interview to gather information on the field and to find employment leads and expand their professional network.

Career Planner

A continuous process of self-assessment, career exploration, decision making, and taking proactive steps to venture towards one's career goals.

LinkedIn

A social network specifically designed for career and business professionals to connect and share content, network, and find job opportunities.

Networking

The exchange of information and ideas among people with a common profession or special interest, often in an informal social setting.

Personal Branding

The practice of marketing people and their careers as brands. It is the ongoing process of developing and maintaining a reputation and impression of an individual, group, or organization.

Soft Skills

Personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.

Hard Skills

The specific knowledge and abilities required to be successful in a job.

Professional Development

The process of improving and increasing capabilities of staff through access to education and training opportunities in the workplace, through outside organization, or through watching others perform the job.

Career Path

The progression of jobs in an individual's career. It can pertain to different industries or a ladder of jobs within one organization.

Job Market

The market in which employers search for employees and employees search for jobs. It refers to the competition and interplay between different labor forces.

References

Individuals who can attest to the character and qualifications of a job applicant, often requested by employers to gain insight into the applicant's abilities and work ethic.

Portfolio

A collection of work samples that shows your capabilities to prospective employers, often used by those in artistic or creative fields.

Behavioral Interview

A job interviewing technique whereby the applicant is asked to describe past behavior in order to determine whether they are suitable for a position.

Transferable Skills

Skills developed in one situation which can be transferred to another situation. They are particularly important when applying for jobs where you do not have direct experience.
